Brandon League’s Struggles

Some reassurance about Brandon League’s recent string of reeking stinkers.

As a Twins fan living in Oregon–and so watching the Mariners everyday–it’s a pretty depressing stretch of May going on right now. One thing that’s cool is that both those teams have broadcast teams that are unfailingly optimistic. Sure, it’s whistling past the graveyard kind of optimism, but they don’t act too jaded and thus prove even more depressing than what’s been going on in the field.

Since I watch the Mariners every night, I just have to add that League has been terrible. His boxcore lines appear below.

Sunday, May 8, CHA 5 SEA 2: 1 1/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2K; Loss (0-1) [-.343 WPA]

Tuesday, May 10, BAL 7 SEA 6 (13): 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 K; Blown Save (1), Loss (0-2). [-.799 WPA]

Thursday, May 12, BAL 2 SEA 1 (10): 1/3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER; Blown Save (2), Loss (0-3). [-.799 WPA (!)]

Friday, May 13, CLE 5 SEA 4: 2/3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 HR; Blow Save (3), Loss (0-4). [-.916 WPA]

So, that’s -2.857 WPA in only four appearences, with 3 IP, 13 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 HR for an ERA of 30.00 and a WHIP of 4.333.

So, I don’t know how reassured I am, since even starters getting shelled at this rate get body parts examined or assigned to other duties. On the other hand, the alternatives are worse.
